Cowboy & Chief: A Wild West Campground & Corral Horse Rescue Story

Chief and Cowboy: Always side by side.
At Wild West Campground & Corral, every horse has a story—but few are as unforgettable as Cowboy and Chief. These two Paint horses didn’t just arrive at our family-friendly Wisconsin campground… they found a second chance at life.
Rescued together from a heartbreaking situation, Cowboy and Chief came to Wild West Campground & Corral in July 2023, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Today, they’re not just part of our herd—they’re a big part of what makes visiting Wild West such a meaningful horseback and camping experience in Wisconsin.
We spent some time getting to know them a little better…
Q: Let’s start at the beginning—how did you two end up at Wild West Campground & Corral?
Cowboy:
Well now, it wasn’t exactly a trail ride story. Me and Chief were dropped off at a zoo—and not the kind where horses get pampered. Things weren’t looking too good… but somehow, we got lucky. Someone stepped in and brought us here to Wild West Campground & Corral.
Chief:
We didn’t even have names back then. We just had each other. Coming here gave us safety, care, and a chance to start over. That’s something special you don’t forget.
Q: You’ve become known as best friends around the campground—what makes your bond so strong?
Chief:
We’ve been through the hardest part of life together. That kind of bond stays with you. Wherever Cowboy goes, I’m usually not too far behind.
Cowboy:
He keeps me grounded… most of the time. Every good herd needs balance, and I guess that’s us.
Q: Cowboy, visitors at Wild West say you’ve got quite the personality…

“Now you don’t.”

Cowboy: “Now you see me…”
Cowboy:
I like to call it enthusiasm! If you’re visiting Wild West Campground in Wisconsin and you’ve got treats or attention, I will find you. And yeah… I might cut the line. Can’t help it—I’ve got energy!
Chief:
“Energy” is a nice way of putting it. He definitely makes sure no moment is boring around here.
Q: Chief, how would you describe yourself to campers visiting the corral?
Chief:
I’m a little more easygoing. I enjoy meeting families, especially the kids who come for that authentic horse experience at Wild West Campground. I’ve got a big heart—and if you see a horse with a short blonde tail, that’s me.
Cowboy:
Yep, that tail is famous around here. Makes him easy to spot from across the pasture.

Chief’s famous tail!
Q: What was it like arriving at Wild West Campground & Corral for the first time?
Chief:
It felt peaceful. Safe. The staff and campers took the time to connect with us, and even helped name us. That was the beginning of feeling like we belonged.
Cowboy:
And I quickly realized this place had everything—good people, plenty of attention, and yes… treats. It didn’t take long to call it home.
Q: What do you love most about life at this Wisconsin campground now?
Cowboy:
Meeting new visitors! Families, campers, kids—it’s always something new. Especially if they’re here for the horse corral experience at Wild West Campground.
Chief:
For me, it’s the quiet moments. Watching the campground come to life, feeling the connection with people who visit—it’s peaceful. It’s the kind of life every rescue horse deserves.
Q: What would you say to someone planning a trip to Wild West Campground & Corral?
Chief:
Come visit us. Whether you’re here for camping in Wisconsin or just stopping by the corral, there’s something special waiting here.

Cowboy loves his treats!
Cowboy:
And bring treats. I’m serious about that part.
